Why Should I Eat My Veggies?

Why should I eat my veggies?

Have you ever wondered what could happen to a person who never ate any veggies? Perhaps you’re a person who needs to eat your veggies?  Do you know how the absence of these foods can affect you?

Here’s the short list of diseases or ailments that one could suffer from if they’re not eating their fruits and vegetables:

A leading cancer connection

There are several nutrients found in plants that are now known to protect against cancer. That’s huge when you think about it.

Millions of lives are claimed each year in this country by cancer, yet when you eat your veggies, you are able to help protect against cancer.  Mother Nature does know what she is doing. She provided us foods that help fight cancer. All we have to do is eat them!

A bad heart and poorly functioning brain

Along with cigarette smoking and an unhealthy body weight, a diet low in veggies can have detrimental effects on your heart and brain.  This is why some people get blood vessel blockages for example.  It is now being found that a nutrient-poor diet can lead to diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s.  Isn’t it good to know that there are simple things like vegetables that can help protect us against such things?

Diabetes

Here’s a fun fact for you: lots of leafy green vegetables can protect you from developing type 2 diabetes. I’m thinking leafy green vegetables are much preferred over insulin shots and a strict diabetes diet to manage diabetes for the rest of one’s life.

Digestive Troubles

Veggies provide fiber! Fiber keeps your digestive system strong, reliable and healthy.  Did you know that you should take in about 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories you consume daily?

Guess what:  according to the federal government’s 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the average American consumes less than half the recommended amount.

Overweight or Obese

Plants contain significant bulk in the form of water and fiber, which means when you eat your veggies, they fill you up without adding many calories.  Again, we just have to admire Mother Nature. She was all over providing us with the foods that keep us feeling and looking our best.

Nutrient Deficiency

In many ways, this one should be at the top of the list, because a deficiency in nutrients really does begin the dwindling spiral, doesn’t it?

A nutrient deficiency allows your system to be unprotected actually.  That is why eating foods high in nutrients (or taking quality supplements to help accomplish that) can actually protect against cancer and Diabetes.

Here’s some interesting things about nutrients

  • A deficiency in vitamin C causes a disease called scurvy and compromises your immune system and your body’s ability to heal itself. Though this is very rare, there are other deficiencies that are much more common, such as fatigue, depression, and connective tissue defects like gum disease.
  • Dark-green and orange vegetables are good sources of vitamin A. This promotes cardiovascular health and guards against night blindness and cataracts.
  • Vitamin K, found in green vegetables, aids in blood clotting.
  • The vitamin E of nuts and green, leafy vegetables protects you from heart disease and cancer.

But what if you don’t like vegetables?

What if the vegetables you’re getting don’t give you sufficient quantities of the nutrients you need?

What if you’ve done what thousands of others have?  Buy low-end, low-quality vitamins that your body simply can’t absorb or use (mostly from your local grocery store or drug store)?

The answer is you are still at risk

The solution is to start getting the right foods and supplements. Another thing to consider, and especially if cancer or diabetes runs in your family, now is the time to protect against cancer and to think about diabetes prevention steps you could be taking.

An ounce of protection is much less costly both financially, as well as mentally and physically when it comes to those two diseases.

Here’s the other side of this coin though.  As you can see, much of the damage we cause when we don’t follow mother nature’s “eat your veggies” command is truly scary, but what about the stuff that isn’t scary, and only makes the quality of your life better?

When you eat your veggies, here are some of the benefits you’ll enjoy almost immediately

  • better mental acuity
  • tons and tons more energy
  • better sleep
  • more alert
  • happier
  • slim down

Why would you choose to eat your veggies help contribute to all of those positive things? Because your body is no longer getting “the cheap gas” which causes it to splutter and clog like a car can do when it’s fuel filter is clogged by all those “toxins” in that cheap gas.  It’s getting the premium!  And it will give you, in turn, a premium life experience.

If you’re thinking you are not currently filled with an abundance of energy, happiness, alertness, or if you feel you need to lose some weight. The first place to start is getting you to eat your veggies. Then getting you off those grocery store vitamins and onto true supplements, which will make your life better.

If your “go button” is to protect against cancer or if you are worried about Diabetes, then again, you’ve got to eat your veggies and get off those worthless grocery store supplements.
